Proud to Let You Be You

June 27, 2011

If you were to walk around Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood on Sunday while polling people on their level of happiness, from 1-10 (1 = very unhappy, 10 = very happy), you’d expect an average of 9.99. Who doesn’t love being around happy people? The Chicago Pride Parade is the only day of the year in Chicago where you’ll find 750,000 people happy & smiling in the same neighborhood. You are missing out if you’ve never participated in this joyous, exuberant, and colorful event.

Since my first Pride experience in 2008, when I moved into the Lakeview neighborhood, I felt an affinity to the happiness that accompanies the parade–smiles to the left, smiles to the right, smiles everywhere! In the beginning I found myself wondering where all the smiles came from, but as I became more familiar with the culture surrounding the parade, it all made sense. I understood that it was a day to be yourself and celebrate who your DNA designed you to be. It’s a perfect day to LET YOU BE YOU, and therefore, be happy.

With that in mind, I decided to publish this post tonight. Being a fan of happiness and happiness research, I have a collection of “Happiness” articles/stories/links from the web and will share some of them below. Enjoy, thanks for reading, and be proud of who you are:

  • The Top 10 Happiest Countries in the World – I never would have thought so many cold countries would be happy.
  • SCIENTISTS FIND GENE LINKED TO HAPPINESS – People tend to be more or less satisfied with their lives depending on what form of the gene they have. Which do you have?
  • AWARENESS App for iPhone Users – Track your happiness. This app provides a customized and interactive experience to the users for helping them in reducing stress and improving vital areas of life such as health, relationships and happiness.
  • HAPPINESS HAS A DARK SIDE – For the pessimists out there…Be careful, “when people don’t end up as happy as they’d expected, their feeling of failure can make them feel even worse.”
  • The Happy Planet Index – They aim to improve quality of life by promoting innovative solutions that challenge mainstream thinking on economic, environment and social issues. They work in partnership and put people and the planet first.
  • 5 Life-Changing Ideas from Happiness Research – the science of happiness.
