TOM TRAVELS – Time for an Austin Coffee Crawl

A note from Tom: I have much to catch up on, especially writing a post about the educational & entertaining event called Science in the Pub. I need more time, hence, my plan for Friday.

You’ve heard of Pub Crawls? Well, Tom is doing a coffee crawl on Friday. One aspect of Austin that he enjoys is the coffee scene. Chicago has great coffee, but not coffee shops. Most coffee shops are Caribou or Starbucks. But in Austin, there are more options. Time to explore and catch up on emails, blog posts, and reviewing over 1000 pictures while Tom chills out in multiple Austin coffee shops. (Although, don’t be surprised if he spends less time working and more time talking with complete strangers) Anyone want to join me?

If any Austinites are reading this, please share recommendations you have for coffee shops. Otherwise, Google will be the guide. In the meantime, here’s Tom’s favorite science tattoo during Science In The Pub (also, Tom is looking for a DNA tattoo. If anyone can recommend a reliable tattoo artist who can paint DNA, please share).

    Coffee shops –
Dominican Joe’s on South Congress was my favorite for coffee flavor and is a pretty nice environment for chilling or talking to interesting people,
Austin Java (downtown in the newish City Council building or on Barton Springs) is pretty good too,
Mozart’s on the lake (so pretty – make sure u go during the day),
La Tazza Fresca (north of UT) is good for people watching,
Bennu on the east side is open 24 hrs….I was addicted to their cafe au lait’s!

I wrote my dissertation at Strange Brew in South Austin in 12-16 hour time chunks…but they only have 2 coffees at a time (but they are also open 24 hours and were the closest to my apt).

    Hey Tom,
Some suggestions on coffee joints, Ruta Maya, Bouldin Creek, Thunderbird, Flightpath, Jo’s on South Congress and Clementine.
For tats, I’ve never been, but heard good things about Atomic Tattoo on N. Burnet. Plus, the name kind of goes with the science theme.

Thank you Joey and Angela, no need for Google. Definitely find me at Joe’s, Atomic Tattoo, and Strange Brew at some point. How many coffee shops make a Coffee Shop Crawl legit?
