Sustainability at UIC–where green accessories are the norm

February 3, 2012

The world population today is 7,020,174,199

On Tuesday January 31, 2012, The Office of Sustainability (OS) at the Univ. of Illinois-Chicago (UIC) celebrated it’s 4th year of existence. Past, current, and future leaders of the UIC environment gathered to share ideas, educate, and inspire the upcoming generations of students. As awards were handed out and participants snacked on cheese & crackers, I couldn’t help but notice a sea of green at the event.

The OS has turned UIC into a “green” campus with programs such as the Green Office Challenge, Pipette Tip Recycling in medical research labs, and iCarpool; and they are not stopping there. At the celebration, the OS utilized the power of collective wisdom by asking people to share their ideas about how to make UIC a more environmentally-friendly community. The result was a collage of ideas stuck to the wall, a few of which I like very much.

In the middle of the sea of green was an island of Outreach & Education that included a collection of facts:

  • When you toss out one aluminum can, you waste the SAME energy as in a can half-full of gasoline.
  • Recycling 1 ton of paper saves the lives of 17 mature trees or enough energy to power the average American home for FIVE months.
  • The average American will throw away 600 times their adult weight in garbage in their lifetime.
  • Idle electronics use 5% of our residential electricity, costing consumers more than $8 billion annually.

And let’s not forget the inspirational leaders of the future, with enough silliness & smiles to share with the world.

I have no doubt in my mind that humanity has the capacity to make great progress to solve our environmental problems, and when we put our minds together, no force of nature can prevent us from finding happiness. Every negative piece of information we receive is balanced with a positive, happy moment to share. The UIC Office of Sustainability’s 4th birthday was one of those moments. As we head into the future, please remember the students and children on planet earth. Everything we do today affects their quality of life tomorrow.

Thanks for reading. Don’t be afraid of your ideas, letUbeU. I’ll leave you with 2 messages…
